University and College Sport

Scaling concussion education delivery to protect health and wellbeing.

In Partnership With:

Tailored.

Each learner, sport and organisation is unique. Meeting individual needs is critical to improve knowledge and behaviour long-term.

Evidence-based.

Information shared is based on the latest science and concussion guidelines.

Supportive.

A supportive place for discussing whatever concussion questions or ideas student athletes might want to delve into.

The Objectives

To support concussion prevention, identification and management through student-sport tailored educational courses and resources.

To improve concussion awareness and practice across student sport in Scotland.

To empower individuals to look after their brain health and encourage safe lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

The Courses

In-person or online workshops.

We run in-person or online workshops for small groups of student athletes and coaches. Our workshop programming spans 3 hours and covers key aspects of prevention, identification and management, with a particular focus on empowering learners to become a part of improving concussion culture within their teams and organisation, as well as ensuring they know who and where to turn to if and when a concussion happens. The course itself has been running since 2015, and is informed by academic research studies led by Dr Adams.

Online module.

We run an online module for student athletes, coaches and support staff.

Course seats are part-funded for organisations who are a member of Scottish Student Sport.

  • Learners signed up to the course by their university or college can access the latest concussion information at any time from wherever.

  • The module includes a discussion forum where learners can ask each other questions and advice. Learners also have direct access to the course facilitator.

  • We’ve developed a number of student-sport relevant resources (e.g. PDFs, social media assets) for learners to download, use, and share across their clubs and organisations.

The Outcome

Improved knowledge, attitudes and practice.

Research evaluation carried out as part of this project enable us to assess the impact of the courses, including barriers and facilitators to change and the ways in which our courses can be improved.
